Emory Cares: Community Leadership Impact Program (CLIP)

The Emory Alumni Association is pleased to support the Emory Cares: Community Leadership Impact Program (CLIP).

Launched in the spring/summer of 2023, CLIP will strengthen Emory’s presence and relationships with nonprofit boards and Atlanta-area alumni.  The members are comprised of alumni who are interested in serving on a nonprofit board and/or have previous experience on nonprofit boards.  Through a series of workshops and gatherings, the cohort will learn to be effective nonprofit board members and agents of community change.

Applications have closed for the Spring 2024 Cohort.

Emory Cares: CLIP participants attend a series of four educational modules focusing on key components of service on nonprofit boards over the spring, and wrap up in early summer with a closing event and discussion of next steps.  At the end of the program, participants will receive a certificate of completion from the Emory Alumni Association.

The educational modules have been developed in partnership with a consultant from the Georgia Center for Non-Profits, and will cover the below topics:

  • Module 1: Board Basics and Governance: This module will provide an introduction to nonprofit boards, their roles, responsibilities, and best practices in governance. We will also explore Emory’s role in the Atlanta community and existing board roles within Emory University.
  • Module 2: Legal, Fiduciary, Ethics, and Risk Management: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of legal obligations, fiduciary duties, ethical considerations, and risk management strategies.
  • Module 3: Grants, Fund Development, and Advocacy: This module will focus on effective grant writing, fundraising techniques, and advocacy strategies to support the organization's mission.
  • Module 4: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Culture: Participants will explore the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in board service, fostering an inclusive organizational culture.

Next Steps:

As CLIP continues to evolve, additional discussion topics may be added, such as:

  • How to make board service more accessible to Emory’s diverse alumni population.
  • The value of the Emory alumni community as a force for positive change and an active network with associated benefits.
  • More ways that alumni can strengthen the relationship between Emory and the city of Atlanta.
