Emory Explores: Food Justice & Sustainability

Thursday, April 21, 2022 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Join the Emory Alumni Association for an impactful conversation by Emory alumna Yaza Sarieh, Development Coordinator with the Global Growers Network. Yaza graduated from Emory in May 2020 and is passionate about food justice both professionally and personally. We will also have Jamie Constantine, a current Emory student join the conversation to talk about her experience as a student and finding her passion in food insecurity and food justice. Participants will learn more about Yaza and Jamie’s experience advocating for food justice and get to take part in an interactive breakout conversation to talk more about what we can personally do to make our environment more sustainable!

This program is brought to you in partnership with Emory Cares as we bring light to serving and giving back to our community all around the world. Everyone is invited and welcomed to this virtual event!

About Our Speakers:

Yaza Sarieh 18Ox 20C

Born and raised in a family of Palestinian refugees with agrarian backgrounds, Yaza is passionate about supporting people living in displacement, creating equitable and inclusive local food systems, and uplifting the needs and interests of diverse communities. After graduating from Emory University with a degree in History and Arabic, Yaza has spent the past few years conducting research and evaluation on Georgia Farm to School programs and their impact on food security, health, and equity. She is currently the Development Coordinator for Global Growers Network, supporting fundraising efforts, events, and community engagement. Additionally, Yaza has spent time overseas in various countries of the Middle East and South Asia as a Henry Luce Scholar learning about participatory methods of development. In her free time, Yaza loves to practice Tatreez (Palestinian embroidery), to read books, and to volunteer with local food banks.

Jamie Constantine 20Ox 22C

Jamie Constantine is an Oxford Continuee and current senior in ECAS majoring in Political Science and minoring in Community Building and Social Change (CBSC). It is through her experience with the CBSC Fellowship that she first became connected to the ideas of Food Justice and Sustainability while being an intern for Global Growers Network during the summer of 2021. Jamie and two other CBSC Fellows created the Food Leadership Training Program (FLTP). Jamie continued to be active in food sovereignty and sustainability spaces by taking Emory's Sustainable Food Fair course, presenting to the Georgia State Senate Committee on Increasing Access to Healthy Foods and Ending Food Deserts, volunteering in Emory's Educational Gardens, and spending the occasional weekends volunteering in Georgia through the organization Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF). Taking all these experiences together, Jamie wants to pursue a career building sustainable food systems with the needs of immigrant and refugee populations in mind to end social place isolation. Jamie hopes to gain experience working towards this goal next year on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant to Mexico while learning more about urban agriculture abroad.
